In our inaugural Around the Kettle interview, we caught up with our
2020 Graduation speaker, Deina Felix (BJP ‘15). Deina
is going into her sophomore year at NYU on a pre-med track, and
plans to become a cosmetic dermatologist. We chatted about likes
& interests, BJP’s impact on her, graduation and the experience of
speaking, and her advice for our current BJP students. Check out
the highlights from our conversation below!

Education: BJP ‘15, Notre Dame Academy ‘19, NYU ‘23

Most recent read / Book rec to BJP students: Goodbye Stranger
by Rebecca Stead / The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan

Favorite Experience / Memory at BJP: Camp

Most memorable teacher: Mr. Chap

Favorite Sports & Activities: Soccer, basketball, crochet, jump rope, and dance

Commitment to doing justice: “I feel an obligation to be vocal, to stand up for what I
believe in.”

Advice for current BJP students: “Just be yourself. This is such a good time in your
life. Don’t let it go by without realizing that. This is where you do a lot of growing in
yourself- your interests change, you meet new people who help you grow as a
person. Be open to change.”

The best part of being an alum: Ms. Theroux and the Graduate Support Program. “It’s
just nice to know that no matter what, there’s always a community that will stand behind
you. I talk to all my friends from BJP all the time. They’re my friends for life.”

“I feel like BJP shaped me both academically and also as a person. I feel like going into
high school and even in college now because at BJP, there was always a time and place
for things. Now, I like having a set schedule so that I can get everything done on time
and efficiently. I appreciated that at BJP it wasn’t just about making us better
academically. We did service trips every year, and even our character grades showed
that the grades aren’t the only thing that matters. It’s about how you treat yourself and
how you treat your classmates.”
