Patricia J. Gauvey Library Fund
for the
Cat MacRae Memorial Library
Patricia Gauvey will leave her post as president of Brooklyn Jesuit Prep on June 30th. With gratitude for her many years of service to the school, the Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the establishment of the Patricia J. Gauvey Library Fund to support BJP’s Cat MacRae Memorial Library.
We invite you to join our BJP family on June 6, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Parish Hall of St. Teresa of Avila Church as we celebrate Pat's extraordinary commitment and service to BJP.
Pat has been a mainstay of BJP. She well deserves the moniker of the “Second Founder” of BJP. Her astute leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the high quality of BJP’s education will be passed on to generations of students to come.
Pat began her six-year tenure as president of BJP in 2013, but her first contact with the school came over seven years earlier. After retiring from her legal career and having served as a parent volunteer at her children’s school Poly Prep, she was introduced to the school by Frank Murphy, BJP's Board Chair. In 2006 she assumed the role of volunteer librarian and with her start-up library, began to create avid readers of her students. She often recalls with enthusiasm the pleasure she took in discovering new books that captured the specific interests of both the oldest and youngest BJP students. Even during her first year as the school’s president, she found time to meet her administrative responsibilities while continuing her much-loved role as librarian.
Throughout her years as president Pat gave herself fully to strengthening and developing the school’s programs. She worked indefatigably to stabilize the school’s financial position by expanding the number of donors and strengthening the Board of Trustees. Early in her tenure, when faced with financial problems, she spearheaded fundraising efforts with the help of BJP friends, parents and students, enabling the school to remain open. We have always admired Pat for her ability to address supporters with a single-minded passion that focused clearly on the needs of BJP’s children. Well-known for her endearing and straight-forward honesty, Pat’s candidness with donors could be summed up in her oft-used phrase: “This school is God’s work, but God’s work doesn’t come cheap!”
Pat has always kept the needs of individual students and their families on the front burner. Over the years, in recognition of her care for them, many graduates have returned to thank her for the BJP education that set them on the path of success. Parents as well have often expressed gratitude for the help Pat and her team provided in securing high school admissions and financial support for their sons and daughters.
Perhaps one of the greatest examples of Pat’s leadership can be seen in her relationship and rapport with our school’s current and former principals, Greg Arte and Brian Chap, as well as with the faculty and staff whom she always treated with great respect and fairness. Her straightforward, honest, and caring manner transformed many colleagues into lasting friends who continue to admire her clear focus on helping students break the cycle of poverty through faith-based education.
Brooklyn Jesuit Prep will remain forever grateful to Pat for her extraordinary dedication and commitment to its mission. We hope you can join us on June 6th as we celebrate Pat, and we welcome your support of the Patricia J. Gauvey Library Fund by sending your donation to:
