  • The Annual Fund for BJP Supports:

Extended School Day and Small Class Sizes: Study hall, as well as sports and activities, are part of the daily schedule at BJP. Class sizes are small (15 students), which facilitates holistic care and a strong sense of community.

Summer Leadership Academy: Our annual Camp Montmartre at Fairfield University is one of the most impactful aspects of the BJP program. Students grow academically, personally, and spiritually over three weeks each July.

Graduate Support: 100% of BJP’s Class of 2025 gained admission to Catholic high schools. Out of 20 graduates, 19 will attend rigorous Catholic high schools. The 20th will attend Andover Academy, a boarding school in Massachusetts, also known for its prestige.

  • Brooklyn Jesuit Prep Graduation

Student Sponsorship directly impacts our students and provides access to Catholic education. Transform a child's life today by sponsoring them at BJP.

Brooklyn Jesuit Prep is grateful for supporters interested in sponsoring a student.

At BJP, the cost to educate one student is $20,000. On average, each family pays a total of $75 a month to attend our school. Sponsors help bridge the gap between the cost to educate and the cost to attend. Participants of this program are vital to our students’ success.

We strive to foster connections between our students and their sponsors.  We firmly believe that these connections are transformative not only for our students, but for sponsors as well.  As our past President Fr. Powell said, “Learning kids’ names, learning their hopes and dreams will hopefully make your heart even more restless than it may already be.”

  • Patricia Calabrese

    Calabrese Planned Giving Society

Brooklyn Jesuit Prep is proud to announce the creation of the Calabrese Planned Giving Society, founded in 2022 by Patricia Calabrese's loving husband, Steve.

This planned giving society represents a group of dedicated supporters who have generously decided to include BJP in their estate planning.  Their generosity will ensure the BJP mission forever stands, allowing generations of future BJP students to receive rigorous, transformative education.

This society is named for Patricia Calabrese, who tragically passed away from Parkinson’s Disease. Her life and love helped reinvigorate her husband Steve’s commitment to doing justice.

“I have always considered Patricia to be my gold standard for kindness. Everyday since she has gone, I seek to incorporate a bit more of her heart in mine, because she had the bigger heart. She is, therefore, the perfect choice to name this society after." - Steve Calabrese

A product of Jesuit education, Steve understands the importance of BJP’s work. He grew up on Avenue K & Albany Avenue in Brooklyn, commuting to Regis High School every morning by subway at the Junction. He has gotten involved and volunteered at Nativity schools in the past. However, Patricia’s passing inspired him to commit to BJP in a deeper way: by founding this society and including BJP in his estate planning. “Patricia suffered a lot physically and emotionally. But somehow, I know BJP’s work redeems her pain and transforms it into helping young students, something she would very much have loved.”

For Steve, supporting BJP’s work is as important as supporting that of his alma mater. “It is so important to change the trajectory of BJP students’ lives,” says Steve. “If we don’t support these students now, we won’t set them up to succeed in the future.  I see supporting BJP and supporting my alma mater as one and the same cause, but starting with BJP is essential.”

The John Farrell Spirit Award is presented at graduation to a deserving 8th grader who embodies the core values that John exemplified, including warmth, generosity, and a great sense of humor.

Thank you to all who have honored John's life by generously supporting our students over the past twenty years. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue honoring John's inspiring life and legacy through this award and invite you to support BJP in this special way by making a gift in John or Marie's memory. Your generosity will help us support the recipient of this award and advance our mission at BJP.

Please reach out to development@brooklynjesuit.org with any questions.

  • Melissa Garville

Melissa Garville was a dedicated trustee, volunteer, and supporter of Brooklyn Jesuit Prep. She dedicated so much of her time advocating for our students and their right to access excellent, Catholic educational opportunities. On November 26, 2020, Melissa tragically passed away. We ask you to join us in remembering Melissa as we honor her memory.

The Garville Scholars Program was established to continue Melissa's work at our school. BJP's commitment to our students is to provide access to a rigorous education, helping them gain admission to rigorous Catholic high schools. The Garville Scholars Program allows them the opportunity to receive tuition assistance for their high school education, benefit from high school entrance preparation, and experience the many cultural offerings of New York City. This program benefits all of our students each year, and especially benefits eight BJP alumni who are Garville Scholars currently in high school. To remain Garville Scholars, these students are required to provide academic updates to our school and return as volunteers to fulfill their service hours. We share a special note of gratitude to Melissa's parents, Greg and Chris Garville, for for their monumental work honoring her legacy through their generosity and commitment to our mission.

We continue to teach our students to live out the values Melissa exemplified. We are filled with gratitude for the commitment and care she showed to our young scholars. On the fifth year anniversary of her passing, we reflect on the immense impact her life and memory has had on our success.

  • The Roccario-Braithwaite Legacy Fund

Photo: Jake Braithwaite at Fairfield University Summer Camp

In honor of Sally and Erica, we establish this fund to ensure excellent graduate support for the young women who graduate from Brooklyn Jesuit Prep.

Jesuit scholastic Jake Braithwaite, SJ is descended from two highly intelligent women. Both Sally Braithwaite and Erica Roccario attended college, Rosemont College and the University of Paris, respectively. Thanks to their rich educational background, both were highly cultured women who passed intellectual curiosity onto their grandson.

In his time at Brooklyn Jesuit Prep, Jake saw such potential in the many intelligent girls that pass through our doors. Unfortunately, the girls private high schools in New York City have less capacity to fund rich educational experiences for their students than do the boys schools. In honor of Sally and Erica, we establish this fund to sustain our robust graduate support program. The funds raised will allow our Graduate Support Director to support our 8th graders and graduates in their journeys to and through high school. This program has led to some outstanding results in recent years, including BJP alumnae earning scholarships to Cathedral, Notre Dame, Dominican Academy, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Fontbonne, St. Saviour, and more.

Your gifts are an investment in their future, with hope that generations to come will benefit from the seeds planted here. We thank you for your consideration and your generosity.

  • Greg and Lauren McCaig

In Memory of Greg McCaig (1953-2020)
“What you lose as you age is witnesses, the ones that watched from early on and cared, like your own little grandstand.”  - John Updike

Our goal in establishing the Greg and Lauren McCaig Family Scholarship is to create something that is forever present, in the form of an ongoing scholarship. Greg credited so much of his fiber and character to the Jesuit tradition, and through this scholarship, we will honor his memory by helping a student every year.

    Photo: Greg and Lauren McCaig

The money collected for this fund will be invested, and each year the income generated on the fund will provide tuition assistance for a student through BJP’s Graduate Support Program. The program is designed to ensure that graduates successfully complete high school and prepare themselves for college. BJP stays in close contact with their graduates, and offers guidance, mentorship and tuition assistance when needed, which is where our financial support will be so critical. Every dollar raised will help a student in need complete their Jesuit education.

‍Below is a brief reflection from Greg’s son, Tim. To donate, you can fill out your information at the bottom of the page. On behalf of the entire McCaig family, THANK YOU for your time, consideration and support of this worthy cause.

We chose the John Updike quote above because the term witness reminded me of my father. A witness is someone who has knowledge of something by recollection and experience, and who can tell about it accurately.

For most of us, when we reflect on a memory, we remember bits and pieces, but not my dad. He was a storyteller in every sense of the word. Like his favorite director, John Ford, he knew how to set the scene and frame the action. He recalled every detail down to the weather. When he was done, he had always managed to reach back in time and hand you something that made you think, or laugh, and sometimes cry.

He went out of his way to share stories about growing up in Brooklyn with his 5 brothers, or his beloved time with Jesuits and classmates at Brooklyn Prep. He miraculously recalled the details of the bar business years, and weaved the tradition of the historic New York Times into the fabric of his family stories (himself, two brothers, his father, and uncle all sharing in that tradition.)

He had a knack for knowing what bound people together...laughter, gratitude for days gone by, love for those who were there with you, and reliving those moments through stories to keep them forever present.

When I think of this term witness, I think of someone who verifies your experience. Someone who was there with you, in a moment or a lifetime, and says, ‘yes, this is true and here’s why it matters.’ It is a person who stood beside you in difficulty, or in celebration, and validates who you are, and what you stand for. It is someone you trust. That’s who my dad was for me, and for so many others.

When we lost Greg, my sister and I lost a father, my mother a husband, our family lost an uncle, brother or cousin, and for others, they lost a friend. What unites all of us is that when we lost Greg McCaig…we lost a witness to each of those special moments that we shared with him.

Please join us in donating to this fund in memory of Greg McCaig.

    Thank you,
    Tim, Julianne and Lauren McCaig

  • Gifts from IRAs
Donors 70 1/2 years of age or older are eligible to direct up to $108,000 each year to Brooklyn Jesuit Prep via a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

For donors 73 years of age or older, IRA gifts can also count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for this tax year.
    ‍‍
For a QCD to count towards the current tax year, the funds must come out of your IRA by December 31st.

    Donor Advised Funds
Donor Advised Funds are becoming more popular giving vehicles, and many brokerages offer them, even with no minimum deposit. DAFs are especially beneficial for those:

    • Seeking to counterbalance a year with unexpectedly high earnings.

    • Addressing the tax implications of year-end bonuses or stock options.

    • Seeking to offset taxable income from rebalancing your financial portfolio.

Opening a DAF gives donors the opportunity to make a donation and instantly qualify for a charitable deduction without having to decide on the specific charities to support right away. DAFs also allow donors to combine charitable gifts made in the same tax year to optimize your deduction.

After assets are contributed to your DAF, assets can be invested and will earn returns without being taxed. A donation to your DAF can make a larger impact on Brooklyn Jesuit Prep than if you were to liquidate assets prior to donating.

We encourage you to consult with your financial advisors regarding these giving strategies.
