Camp Montmartre

On July 11, our students embarked on a three-week journey to Fairfield University to attend Camp Montmartre. Please scroll to learn more about all Camp had to offer our students this summer.

Week One

After arriving on Saturday afternoon to a flurry of welcome banners organized by their counselors, Ms. Locario, and Ms. Malcousu, students unpacked and hit the ground running. The weekend began with a game of Capture the Flag and other sports and activities. On Sunday, students attended Mass and a performance by BackCountry Jazz. We are thankful for Alain and Cathy DeCoster for facilitating this event and introducing us to BackCountry Concerts! The first weekend concluded with the inaugural Camp Rendezvous - a favorite activity among many BJP students and alumni.

Our scholars began classes at 9:00 AM Monday. Each grade attended ELA and Math classes, followed by Study Hall, Book Club, and Sports and Activities. From playing kickball to reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, they began to settle into a routine and get a feel for life at Camp.

After dinner on Mondays and Wednesdays, students participated in BJP Olympics, competing against each other in various challenges and Minute-To-Win-It games. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students attended Advisory. Our scholars and counselors discussed important historical leaders, exploring how these individuals embody our Grad at Grad principles. Weeknight evenings ended with a rotation of computers, arts and crafts, or sports led by our teachers, leading into nighttime snack and reflection.

The day concluded on Friday with a beach trip for our boys, and extra pool time for girls. Students changed into pajamas to have a group movie night. They watched Akeelah and the Bee in preparation for Saturday night's infamous Camp Spelling Bee

Saturday was field trip day: sixth graders went to Dinosaur State Park, seventh graders took a trip to the Connecticut Science Center, and eighth graders saw Minions & Monsters in the theater.

On Saturday evening, Dillon (7B) won our annual Camp Spelling Bee with the word fluctuation! Ashleigh (6G) received second place, and Nicholas (6B) came in third. Congratulations to our super spellers!

Week Two

Week two began on Sunday with Mass. Students spent the afternoon competing in our World Cup Final watch party. Not only did we project the game, but BJP represented team Argentina and team Spain in an afternoon full of challenges, including egg races and longest kick competitions. Congratulations to the World Cup (and BJP) champion team, Spain!

Sunday night concluded with Rendezvous. Dillon (7B) and Amoy (8G) were voted Campers of the Week for their positivity, effort, and ability to embody the values of Brooklyn Jesuit Prep.

On Tuesday during Sports and Activities, BJP was joined by the Fairfield Women's Basketball team to learn skills like shooting, dribbling, and defense. Our students asked the team plenty of questions, including, "Who is the GOAT and why is the right answer Jalen Brunson?"

Students had a Saturday full of planets and painted turtles for their second weekend of field trips. Sixth graders took a trip to the Discovery Museum, while seventh headed to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center. The eighth graders climbed to new heights at the Adventure Park. Egedanie, a student in 8G, said her favorite part of the park was watching her classmates have fun, while realizing she was afraid of heights.

Congratulations to Saturday evening's Math Bee winners: third place: Isaiah (8B), second place: Erwin (7B), and fIrst place: Paige (8G) for solving the following problem: A class of 195 students went on a field trip. They took 7 vehicles, some cars and some buses. Find the number of cars and buses they took if each car holds 5 students and each bus holds 45 students. Way to go BJP Mathematicians!

Week Three

Sunday's Rendezvous included four more Campers of the Week: Egedanie (8G), Shiloh (8G), Asher (7B), and Ashleigh (6G). These students embody our BJP principles and have gone above and beyond to make Camp an experience to remember.

On Tuesday we hosted class night, where teachers were in charge of entertaining students. The sixth grade teachers led a Minute-To-Win-It game night, while seventh grade had a girls vs. boys kickball game. Eighth graders finished out their final week of camp with a water balloon fight.

Thursday concluded with our final Rendezvous. Our sixth grade class read original poetry and our annual camp t-shirt ceremony commenced. The evening ended with a group prayer and reflection. Two students were selected to be campers of the year: Egedanie (8G) and Isaiah (8B). Over the course of Camp, Egedanie and Isaiah represented each of our Grad at Grad principles, leading their peers with grace, maturity, and pride, exemplifying what it means to be a BJP student.

We concluded camp with Final Mass on Friday, celebrated by Fr. John Mulreany, SJ, for the Feast of St. Ignatius. Fairfield University's chapel shares the story of St. Ignatius within their stained glass windows, and we were glad to gather as a community to reflect on the teachings of St. Ignatius and the founding of the Jesuit order. After Mass, students loaded the buses to head home, finishing another meaningful year of Camp Montmartre. We look forward to sharing more memories of Camp with you as August unfolds.
